Doris Saboe
Doris Saboe, 92, of West Union, Iowa died Sunday, October 18, 2020 at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette, Iowa. Doris Elene Saboe was born at home on February 10, 1928 on the farm she grew up on near the Turkey River north of West Union, Fayette County Iowa. Doris was the youngest of seven children, Mayme, Palmer, Agnes, Alvin, Marvin and Clarion, born to Peter and Laura (Kleppe) Helgerson.
Doris was baptized on March 11,1928 and confirmed on September 7, 1941 at the First Lutheran Church on the Ossian blacktop where she remained a member until she was united in marriage to Arnold C. (Sam) Saboe on June 18, 1946. She then joined St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Eldorado and lived to become the oldest living member. To them were born three daughters and one son, Ardys Diane, Marcia Ann, Dorene Kay and Leslie Arnold, who died in infancy.
Doris was a loving farm wife who shared in many of the farm responsibilities alongside Sam, including milking cows and field work. Of course, her great loves were her family and friends who she held so precious and dear as we all could plainly see. She was a great caregiver for everyone, giving of her time, cooking and baking. She loved to bake especially apple pies (sometimes sneaking in a zuchinni pie), cookies, lefse and her famous cherry turnovers. She loved the garden and canning, but would drop everything if she thought the mushrooms were out! She loved sewing and quilting, making crafts, playing cards and bingo with friends. Her church was so important and she belonged to circle, took her turn as funeral committee chair, and the love she put into making layettes was heartwarming and made her so proud.
When Doris was young, she taught herself how to play the guitar and would sing right along, so began her great love of music. Sam and Doris loved to dance and Square Dancing became a part of that. She enjoyed making her own square dance dresses and her closet proved that! Fishing and their trailer at Waukon Junction were also a favorite passion they shared together, along with traveling, making it no surprise that they celebrated 66 years of wonderful marriage.
When they moved to town, Doris worked part time for Alice Koempel for several years and finally had time for coffee with friends, loving when they would stop by for a visit so she could share her cookies. Once in town, she started to collect Angels and proudly displayed them all over her house. Family gatherings were a must and she loved cooking for her family making all their favorites especially lefse! Celebrating her 90th birthday visiting with family and friends was a joy she treasured! Reminiscing about it always.
Doris died at the age of 92 at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette on October 18, 2020 after being a resident there for not quite 2 months. Up until that time she remained in her own home and proud of it.
Doris is survived by her three daughters, Ardie Kuhse (Cloy) Postville, Marcia Soppe (LeRoy) West Union and Dorene Dietzenbach (Eugene) Mt. Pleasant. Seven Grandchildren, Kyle Kuhse (Kristie) Waverly, Gene Dietzenach (Dawn) Mt. Pleasant, Jodi Janssen (Jim) Cedar Falls, Jamie Dietzenbach (Jodee) Dubuque, Laurie Moss (Chris) West Union, Kraig Kuhse (Hilary) Melbourne, and Michael Soppe (Kristin) of Dike. Fifteen Great-Grandchildren, Brody and Brock Kuhse, Makayla, Kaiden and Kohen Dietzenbach, Bo Janssen, Tyler and Sydney Dietzenbach, Ayla and Kyson Moss, Jarett Bunting, Drew and Landon Kuhse, Jaiden and Miya Soppe along with nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, father-in-law and mother-in-law (Peter and Anna Saboe), Son, Leslie, Son-in-law, Cloy Kuhse, her sisters, Mayme Walvatne and Agnes Helgerson, her brothers Palmer, Alvin, Clarion and Marvin Helgerson, four brother-in-laws Harry, Marvin and Lloyd Saboe, and Lawrence Walvatne, four sister-in-laws, Alice, Jeanette and Ella Saboe and Elsie Helgerson.
Doris was the most loving, giving person and always wanted the best for everyone. She was always concerned for everyone's safety and good health. With that being said, we must take into account that she would never want us to take chances on that. As hard and difficult it is to not give everyone the opportunity to say goodbye and extend wishes, we want to keep everyone safe. Therefore, very sadly we will be holding a private family service only.

We were blessed to have our Mom and Grandma for 92 years. She taught us love, patience and so much kindness. We will cherish her memories always. She is now with Dad and we can't tell you how much she missed him. Her journey on earth has ended and a beautiful new life in heaven has begun.
