Madlyn Houg

 

Madlyn Ann Houg, 84, of West Union, Iowa died Sunday, November 8, 2020 at Stoney Brook Village, West Union, Iowa.  She was born May 15, 1936 to Floyd and Mildred (Weston) Cline in West Union, Iowa. Madlyn was baptized on November 8, 1936 and confirmed on June 9, 1946 at United Methodist Church. She graduated from high school in Hawkeye in 1954. She continued her education at Upper Iowa University and received her two-year teaching certificate on May 31, 1956 and Bachelors of Arts with a major in Elementary Education and minor in English/Social Studies on May 28, 1962.

Madlyn was united in marriage with Paul Houg on October 22, 1965 at the United Methodist Church in West Union, Iowa. Throughout the years, she taught kindergarten in Edgewood, Waukon, Albert Lea, Minnesota and West Union. Madlyn taught from 1956 to 1997 and also helped Paul with the farm. She was an active member of the Presbyterian Church serving on various committees. As a member of the WIBC league, Madlyn was an avid bowler. She looked forward to Tall Corn League on Wednesday nights, Coffee League on Thursday afternoons, and state and national bowling tournaments each year. Going to Gold Rush Days in Oronoco every year with Evelyn, making crafts, attending craft shows and walleye fishing up North and on the Mississippi River also filled Madlyn’s days. Madlyn loved her cats, dogs, Jersey cows and working in the garden. She collected Hummels and Precious Moments figurines. Everyone looked forward to her Sunday breakfast omelets. Madlyn loved to go to dairy cow shows, sporting events and any activities of her “adopted” grandchildren.

Surviving Madlyn are her adopted family, Scott and Lori Cannon of West Union, Iowa; grandchildren, John (Ann) Cannon of Dyersville, Iowa, Thomas Cannon of West Union, Iowa, Kim (Chris) Lundgren of Elgin, Iowa and Cassie (David) Woods of Cedar Falls, Iowa; great-grandchildren, Cael, Chase and Caden Cannon, Bailey Sinnwell, Hailee and Khloee Cannon and Jaxson, Brooxton and Nixon Lundgren and her dog Lucy. 

Madlyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul Houg on December 8, 1981; many aunts and uncles; and two brothers-in-law, Ralph Houg, Ron Houg and sister-in-law Garnet Houg.

Funeral Service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 21, 2020 at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Eldorado, Iowa with a visitation from 9:30 a.m. until time of service on Saturday.

Burial will follow at West Union Cemetery, West Union, Iowa.
