William L. “Bill” Cody, 91, of West Union, Iowa formerly of Nevada, Iowa passed away Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at Good Samaritan Society in West Union, Iowa.

Bill was born on January 15, 1929 to Tony and Elsie May (Osborne) Cody in Ames, Iowa. He grew up in Ames and graduated from Ames High School in 1947. After graduating, he served in the US Air Force for 5 years as a B29 mechanic. He married Martha Joan Sorensen in 1951, they returned to Nevada, Iowa where they lived in the house that he built himself, for 35 years until her death in 1986. He then took early retirement, moved to West Union and purchased a farm. He did extensive remodeling to the house and made it his home. In 1994 Bill married the second love of his life Jacqueline Joy Moon, enjoying retirement in their country home. In April 2019, they both moved to Good Samaritan Society due to health problems and Jackie passed away in November 2019.

Bill made his career as a Master Carpenter and then a Job Estimator at Iowa State University, where he worked for 33 years. During this time, he also enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing in his free time and traveling in numerous states. After his retirement he enjoyed volunteering and working at the Baptist church in Elgin and Village Creek Bible Camp in Lansing. He joined Gideons Intl. and was very active distributing scriptures. He was also active in the AWANA youth program.

Bill is survived by his son Jeff (Cindy) Cody of Sheldon, Iowa; Stepson, Jeff (Danielle) Moon of Davenport, Iowa; step-daughter, Stephanie (Brian) Neuhaus of White Bear Lake, Minnesota; nine grandchildren; eight great –grandchildren; and a sister, Helen Helgeland of Ames, Iowa.

Bill was proceeded in death by his wives; his parents; sisters, Opal, Ruth, Evelyn and Dorothy; brother, Frederick; and great-grandson, Hunter Cody

There was a public Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 19, 2020 at First Baptist Church in Elgin, Iowa with Rev. J. T. Young as the officiant. A Visitation was  held from 10-11:00 a.m. before services at the church on Saturday.

A Private Burial with Military Rites will be at Nevada Municipal Cemetery in Nevada, Iowa.

Burnham-Wood-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service is assisting the family with arrangements.
