Most patients may not have even noticed a new owner at Decorah’s Donlon HealthMart Pharmacy because Matthew Maker isn’t new to the business or Decorah.

A 2008 graduate of Creighton University, Maker has been employed at Donlon’s for six years.

The previous owner, Stan Fullerton, began handing over the management of the pharmacy to Maker several years ago, and on Feb. 1, 2014, Maker became the owner.

Valley grad gives back to the community

A group of 40 individuals from the Kirksville, Mo., area, 28 of them high school students, spent time working at the Hidden Valley park  in Elgin. Erick Hanson (front, left), a 1986 Valley graduate, coordinates the faith-based youth camp, which he brings to northeast Iowa each summer.

Erick Hanson knows the value of family and community. Growing up on a farm two miles west of Gunder, he has benefited from both. Hanson, who now lives in Kirksville, Mo., is trying to give a little bit of that back. With the help of a few local residents, some college-age and adult helpers, and a group of teenagers, he has been able to do just that.

Hanson, a 1986 graduate of Valley High School, is in his 15th year of conducting a youth camp for teenagers. They come to northeast Iowa each year to perform service projects that have been lined up for them by those who live in the area.

Delicious treats for Branstad in Fayette County

Dave Rapson (far left) of Country View Dairy near Hawkeye tells Iowa Governor Terry Branstad (second from left) about his company's desire to add a driveway to the property, so future customers of the business would have direct access to the store, rather than drive through the family's front yard. Listening at right are Bob Howard, Country View marketing director, and Roger Arthur, Fayette County Economic Development Board president. (Janell Bradley photo)

Iowa Governor Terry Branstad toured the state in June, networking with Iowa entrepreneurs and their role in economic development.

Thursday, the governor's visit to Country View Dairy near Hawkeye saw Branstad tour the yogurt-processing facility, where there was an added benefit of sampling creamy yogurt and frozen yogurt made on the farm by the Dave and Carolee Rapson family.

The Schaufenbuel family tree has been branching out for over 500 years, and for the first time in its rich history, “Schaufenfest” was recently hosted by its American descendants in St. Lucas.

Until the most recent reunion held June 13-15, the Schaufenbuel clan had gathered in its home country of Switzerland every 25 years. In fact, it becomes mind-boggling when a person is informed that the family celebrated its 300th anniversary reunion in 1934.

Joyce Schaufenbuel of Colorado Springs, Colo., explained that while attending the reunion in 2009, it was suggested that the reunion be held every five years and to have the 2014 celebration in America. The St. Lucas native noted that she and her then 5-week-old daughter Anne attended their first Schaufenbuel reunion in 1984.

Larrabee descendant returns to family's historic home

An added bonus for William Larrabee, descendant of Iowa Governor William Larrabee, while completing a service-learning project for high school is the opportunity to learn more about his ancestors. Photos and other documents in the museum’s archives help the Phoenix, Md., teenager to better understand more about his own family’s connection to Iowa.

Those who visit Montauk in the early portion of July may actually be able to meet William Larrabee in person. No, not the William Larrabee who presided as governor of Iowa from 1886 to 1890, but his great-great-great-grandson, who is spending some time at Montauk this summer.

William Larrabee of Phoenix, Md., is completing a service-learning assignment for his school by shadowing Wade Schott, the site manager at Montauk. He also hopes to learn a good deal more about his family through this unique experience.

“It is rare that someone would be able to find the history of their family so well preserved, like it is for me here at The Montauk historical site. This is my first time here, so I am definitely learning a lot,” said the St. Paul’s High School student who will start his junior year this fall.
