Eugene "Jack" Dibble

 

Eugene "Jack" Dibble, 92, of Postville, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 31, at West Clermont Lutheran Church in Clermont with Rev. Dayna Winke as the Officiant.

Interment followed at God’s Acres in Clermont.

Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Postville, Iowa assisted the family with the arrangements.

Eugene "Jack" Ezra Dibble was born June 6, 1921, the son of Ezra Henry and Helen (Wander) Dibble in Clermont. Jack graduated from Clermont High School in 1938. After high school, Jack enlisted in the US Naval Air Corps. He returned home from service and took over the family farm in rural Clermont.

Frances Josephine Hoopman

 

Frances Josephine Hoopman, daughter of Frank and Josephine Haberly Wilson, was born in rural Cresco on Nov. 22, 1913, and died Dec. 27, 2013, at the Good Samitarian Home in West Union, at the age of 100.

After graduation from Cresco High School, she worked at the National Cash department store in Cresco.

On Dec. 13, 1936 she was united in marriage to Gordon John Hoopman in Caledonia, Minn., and they resided in Cresco. Two children were born to this union.  

In 1947 the family moved to Clermont, where Fran became active in the community. She was a member of the West Clermont Lutheran Church, 64-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary, PTA, Town and Country Club and bridge club.  She enjoyed being a homemaker, gardening, fishing and quilting at the church.

Carroll G. Turner

 

Carroll G. Turner, 90, of Sumner, and formerly of Arlington, died on Thursday evening, Dec. 26, 2013 at Mercy Living Plus in Oelwein.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 30, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Maynard, with Rev. Charis Combs-Lay officiating 

Interment was in Long Grove Cemetery at Maynard.

A Memorial Fund has been established in his name

Carroll George Turner was born on April 28, 1923 at Arco, Minn., the son of George and Ida (Blegan) Turner. 

He graduated from Maynard High School at Maynard, where he was  valedictorian of the class of 1941.

Carroll married Leota B. Cummings on Aug. 23, 1945 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Maynard.  Leota died on Aug. 14, 2009. He later married Mary Lou Nichols Cannon on July 28, 2012, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Maynard.

Clark D. Phelps, 72, of Fayette, (formerly Edgewood) died on Monday, Dec. 30, 2013, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. 

A memorial service was held Friday, Jan. 3, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Edgewood with Pastor Mike Jackson officiating.

Inurnment followed in the Edgewood Cemetery.

He was born on April 12, 1941, in Masonville, the son of Kenneth and Frances (Fry) Phelps. He was educated in rural Strawberry Point schools and was a 1960 graduate of Strawberry Point High School.

Clark was employed by Culligan Water Systems in Elkader from 1974 until 1992 and worked as a custodian for Upper Iowa University in Fayette from 1996 until 2011. He resided in Edgewood and Fayette.

Thomas J. "Tommy" Crilly III

 

Thomas J. “Tommy” Crilly, III, 43, of Urbana, died on Friday evening, Dec. 20, 2013, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, Dec. 28, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elkader with Rev. Paul R. Peters officiating.

Interment was in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Wadena.

A memorial fund has been established “for my boys.”

Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home of Arlington assisted the family with the arrangements.

Thomas Joseph Crilly, III was born on Jan. 5, 1970 in Iowa Falls, the son of Thomas Joseph and Dorothy Ann (Mazza) Crilly, Jr.  He grew up in the rural Wadena area and graduated from Valley of Elgin High School in 1989. 

Tommy moved to Urbana where he raised his sons and owned and operated Crilly Construction, building homes in the greater Cedar Rapids area.

Charles "Chuck" Learn

 

Charles “Chuck” Albert Learn was born on June 17, 1952, in West Union, Iowa, to Howard and Helen (Plaster) Learn. He graduated from North High in West Union in 1971.

Chuck was united in marriage to Joan Messler on August 30, 1975, at the United Methodist Church in Postville, Iowa. Three children were born to this union.

During high school, Chuck worked at Ken’s Conoco; later, he was a salesman for Archer Oil. He was a lifelong crop farmer and also dairy farmed until 2007. Chuck recently worked for Rupp Air Management Systems in West Union. Chuck was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in West Union, Iowa.

Lavon Elizabeth Reichert

 

Lavon Elizabeth Reichert, 89, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Society in West Union, where she had been a resident since November of 2006. 

Lavon was born on December 18, 1924 to Harry and Elma (Meyer) Reichert.  She attended country school and graduated from West Union High School in 1942.  She was a lifetime member of Bethel Presbyterian Church in West Union.

Robert E. Vagts

 

Robert E. Vagts, 48, of West Union, Iowa passed away Tuesday, December 24, 2013 at Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union.  Robert Eugene, the son of Buddy “Bud” and Judith (Moschel) Vagts, was born November 13, 1965 in Decorah, Iowa.  Bob was baptized at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Eldorado, Iowa and was confirmed at the Ossian Lutheran Church in Ossian, Iowa.  Bob graduated from South Winneshiek High School.  He then received a B.S. degree in Exercise Physiology and a M.B.A.  from Arizona State University.  While at ASU he became a member of the Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity.  Bob was the Director of Operations for America West Airlines in Phoenix, Arizona from 1987-2000, he was the Director of Operations for Northwest Airlines in Minneapolis, Minnesota from 2000-2004 and he was the Director of Hub Operations for Frontier Airlines in Denver, Colorado from 2004-2007.  Bob has been the West Union City Administrator since 2010.

Arlene Elsie (Schultz) Schlatter, age 91, died peacefully in her sleep during the early hours of Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013, at her daughter and son-in-law’s home in Apple Valley, Minn.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 21, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye with Rev. David R. Nelson and Rev. Jamie Thompson officiating.

Interment followed in the Hawkeye Cemetery.

Gussie Maye Crafton, daughter of John and Sarah Rorex, was born August 6, 1922, in Egypt, Ark. She graduated from Egypt High School in 1938 and later received a bachelor’s degree from Upper Iowa University.

On Jan. 19, 1943, Gussie was united in marriage to Victor C. Crafton.  After living in Jonesboro, Ark., they moved to Fayette, in 1952.  Gussie worked at and then managed the UIU bookstore from 1961 until her retirement in 1984.

Gussie resided in Maple Crest Manor from March of 2010 until she moved to West Palm Beach, Fla., in October of 2012 after Vic’s death on May 5, 2012. Gussie resided at Personal Touch, Inc. Adult Family Care where she died on Dec. 18, 2013, at the age of 91.

During WW II when Vic served in the army, Gussie traveled to California where she was a “Rosie the Riveter” at an airplane factory.  She was an “all-star” basketball player in both California and Arkansas.
