Lavon Martins

Lavon Martins

 

Lavon Martins, 92, of Postville, Iowa died Friday, October 30, 2020 at Good Samaritan Society in Waukon, Iowa.  Lavon was born September 4, 1928 to Larry and Bessie (Segrist) Ewing in Franklin Township, Iowa. She was baptized on April 17, 1938 and confirmed on October 2, 1955. She attended Forest Mills Country School and graduated from Waukon High School.

Lavon was united in marriage with Virgil Walter Martins on February 13, 1955 at Community Presbyterian Church in Postville, Iowa. Lavon worked at Douglas Drug Store and was a farm wife.  She enjoyed dancing, playing cards, having coffee with her sister, Lola, going to sales and doing ceramics. 

Surviving Lavon are many family members on both the Ewing and Martins side. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil; her parents, Larry and Bessie Ewing; and one sister, Lola Morks.

Helen Reierson, 86, of Elgin, Iowa passed away Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at Good Samaritan Society in West Union, Iowa. Helen Lora Alice Eberling was born April 2, 1934 to Elmer and Lucile (Hammond) Eberling. Helen graduated from Postville High School in 1951.

 

 

Helen was united in marriage with Joseph B. Reierson on April 13, 1954 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Postville, Iowa. Helen and her husband spent their lifetime raising their five children, leading a Christian life and making a continued heritage on the “Reierson” Homestead near Gunder before retiring to Elgin in 1986.

Jean A. “Peggy” Hennager, 94 of Maynard, Iowa died Wednesday evening, October 28, 2020 at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette, Iowa.

Due to the COVID 19 Pandemic, a Private Family Funeral Service will be held with Rev. Dennis Frank officiating.

Interment: Long Grove Cemetery, Maynard.

Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Maynard is assisting the family.

Howard Poitevin age 87 passed away at Mercy One Hospital Waterloo, Iowa on October 14, 2020. 

A graveside service was held  at 2:30 p.m. on Friday October 30, 2020 at the West Union, Iowa City Cemetery. Howard is survived by his children Julie, Jean and Jay and his sister Wanda. 

He graduated with a masters degree from Iowa State University, was a High School Teacher and worked in the Banking Industry. A memorial fund has been set up in his name at Green State Credit Union 3409 Cedar Heights Dr. Cedar Falls, Iowa 50613

Lois J. Miller, 87, of Fayette, formerly of Maynard, Iowa, Temple Bar, Arizona and Ranch Cucamonga, California died Monday morning, October 26, 2020 at the Gundersen Palmer Hospital in West Union, Iowa.

Private family services will be held at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Maynard, Iowa.

Interment: National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, Phoenix, Arizona.

  Memorials may be directed in her name to the Maynard Public Library, Gundersen Palmer Hospital in West Union or Maple Crest Manor in Fayette.

Donald Saboe

Donald Saboe

 

Donald Marvin Saboe, 65, of Elgin, Iowa and West Union, Iowa died Monday, October 19, 2020 at Gundersen Health Systems in La Crosse, Wisconsin.  Donald was born November 24, 1954 to Marvin and Jeanette (McIntyre) Saboe in West Union, Iowa.  He was baptized on November 26, 1954 in the hospital and confirmed on May 18, 1969. Donald graduated from North High School in 1973.

Amazingly, this quiet and polite young man starred on the North High School stage his sophomore through senior years. He had important roles in "The Skin of Our Teeth” in 1970 "The Mouse that Roared” in 1971 and "Harvey” in 1972. As the principal lead in "Harvey” he played Elwood P. Doud, the quiet man who could see a tall, invisible rabbit named Harvey. Don treasures a prop from the play, a large portrait of himself as Elwood with Harvey painted by a classmate and which hangs on a wall of his Elgin home.

LeAnna Hulbert

LeAnna Jane Hulbert, 92, of Clermont, Iowa died Tuesday, October 27, 2020 at Stoney Brook in West Union, Iowa. LeAnna Jane was born May 23, 1928, to Oscar and Helen Johnson Osmundson of West Union. She was baptized and confirmed at West Clermont Lutheran Church, Clermont, where she remained a lifelong member. She received her education at Clermont Schools, graduating with the class of 1946.

LeAnna was united in marriage with Verdell Benjamin Hulbert October 3, 1949, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua. One son was born to this union. Verdell's death occurred September 11, 1963.

After her husband's death, LeAnna was employed by the Fayette County Superintendent's Office, West Union, in 1964. With the formation of Keystone AEA I, Elkader, and the closing of county superintendent's offices, she began employment at Keystone. She worked there until her retirement on June 30, 1990.

Francis Joseph Wenthold, 88, of Ossian, Iowa died Wednesday, October 21, 2020 at his home.  Francis was born March 26, 1932 to Henry and Margaret (Kleve) Wenthold in Festina, Iowa. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Festina. Francis farmed with his brother Ed until he joined the United States Army in 1952, and served in the Korean War.

Mark Kruse

Mark Kruse

 

Mark Anthony Kruse, age 53 of Smyrna, TN passed away unexpectedly on October 1, 2020 in Kuwait.  He was born to Melvin and Mary (Kout) Kruse of Lawler on June 1, 1967.  He grew up in Lawler, IA and attended Turkey Valley Community Schools until he graduated in 1985.  While in school he wrestled and was heavily involved in music and drama.  Shortly after graduating, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he served honorably as a maintenance management specialist for twenty years.  

While stationed in Willow Grove, PA, Mark attended a Navy Ball where he met the woman who would be the love of his life.  Mark and Joanna were married on April 13, 1996.  From this union, two daughters were born, Hannah Jeannette and Emma Gabrielle, both while Mark was serving as a Marine Corps recruiter in Fargo, ND.  Mark and his family would move to Okinawa, Japan where they would live until he retired from active duty.
