David Hackley

David Hackley

 

David LeRoy Hackley, 77, of West Union passed away Saturday, January 11, 2020 at Gundersen Palmer Lutheran Hospital with his family at his side. David LeRoy, the son of William Howard and Doris Elaine (Bates) Hackley, was born September 26, 1942 in Rowan, Iowa. He attended Rowan School. At the age of seventeen, David enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served for twelve years. David was stationed in Jacksonville, Florida before transferring to the Naval Base in Rota, Spain. While in Rota, David met the love of his life, Lucy.

David and Guadalupe “Lucy” Medina were united in marriage on June 3, 1965 in Porta de Santa Maria, Spain. To this union seven children were born. David would later move his family to West Union, Iowa where he served as the Chief of Police. He served the public for thirty years in Rolfe, Clermont, and West Union, Iowa before his retirement.

John H. Halstead 85 of Loup City, NE died Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at Rose Lane Home in Loup City. Mass of Christian burial will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 20, 2020 at St. Josaphat’s Catholic Church in Loup City. Father Richard L. Piontkowski will officiate the Mass.  Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the church with a 7:00 p.m. Vigil at the church. Cremation will follow the service and burial of the ashes will be held at a later date at the Evergreen Cemetery in Loup City. Memorials are suggested to the Halstead family or donor’s choice. Shirley Jean Guyer, 79, of Luana, Iowa, passed January 14, 2020.  She was born September 29, 1940 to Henry Paul William Mueller and Viola Clarice (Thompson) Mueller.  Shirley married Harold LeRoy Guyer October 5, 1963. Shirley went to a one-room country school near St. Olaf for kindergarten through 6th grade.  She attended 7th through 12th grade at the Luana High School and graduated in the class of 1959.  After marriage she lived on a farm near West Union as a farm wife, then moved back to her home farm by Luana in 1971. Worked a summer at the Elgin Corn Factory. She loved working at the McGregor Ceramic Shop for 17 years before retiring in 1995.

Margaret Bohr, age 89, of Ossian, Iowa, died on Thursday, January 9, 2020 at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah.

Visitation was from 4 – 7 p.m. on Monday, January 13, 2020 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian and also after 10 a.m. at the church on Tuesday. There was a prayer service at 7 p.m. following the visitation on Monday. The Schluter-Balik Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian with Rev. Donald Hertges presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery following the service.

Meghan Elizabeth Powers, age 34, of Wilton, Iowa, passed away at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics on Monday, January 13, 2020, after a courageous battle with Breast Cancer.  A gathering will be held from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 18, 2020 at the Grace United Church of Christ, Wilton.  A memorial service will be held at 10:30, immediately following the gathering.  In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for the benefit of her children.  Condolences may be left at www.bentleyfuneralhome.com

Kenneth Lawrence Vagts, 86, of Eldorado, Iowa died Friday, January 3, 2020 at his home in Eldorado. He was born September 14, 1933 to Lawrence and Mabel (Scheelhaase) Vagts in Eldorado, Iowa. Kenneth graduated from West Union High School, West Union, Iowa and attended college for one year at Area One, Calmar, Iowa.

Kenneth was united in marriage with Evelyn McIntyre on May 29, 1955 at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Eldorado, Iowa. Seven children were born to this union.

Former Iowa resident Duane C. Nefzger, 93, died peacefully January 5, 2020 at Apache Junction Health Center in Apache Jct., Arizona.

At his request, no service will be held.

Mr. Nefzger was born August 18, 1926 in Albany, Iowa to Elmer and Eva Pearl Nefzger.  Bud has always had a great sense of humor and enjoyed life to the fullest.  He farmed in Lima, worked with his brother Doyle in the creamery, and held various other jobs before being employed with John Deere.  Bud loved to go fishing and coon hunting during his younger years.  Bud resided in Oelwein, Iowa most of his life.  He retired after 25 years with John Deere and shortly afterwards he and his wife Ardath moved to Apache Jct., Arizona.  In Arizona, Bud managed a mobile home park for several years.   He enjoyed collecting John Deere memorabilia, tinkering with garage sale items, cracking pecans, visiting, and drinking a coke during his later years.

Arthur F. Moellers, 90, of Fayette died Saturday, January 4, 2020 at Ennoble Skilled Nursing and Rehab in Dubuque.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 9, 2020, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Fayette with Rev. Don Komboh celebrating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery, rural Fayette. Visitation will be held from 4 until 7 p.m. Wednesday, January 8, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Fayette and for one hour preceding the mass on Thursday. There will be a rosary recited at 3:45 p.m. and a time for sharing memories at 6:30 p.m.., both on Wednesday at the church. Memorials may be made to the family for later designation.
