Chapter FG meeting held

Chapter FG meeting held

Chapter FG of Fayette met Monday, Jan. 8. It was a very special celebration as Arnetta Pattison joined P.E.O. 50 years ago this night.  She was surprised with flowers and a beautiful cake prior to the start of the meeting. The next Chapter FG of Fayette meeting will be Monday, Feb. 12.

UIU dean’s list

      Upper Iowa University has announced its dean's list for the 2023 fall semester. To be honored, a student must have earned a minimum 3.50 grade point average and be enrolled as a full-time student. The local honorees included:

NFV to host State Jazz Band

NFV to host State Jazz Band

NFV to host State Jazz Band

      North Fayette Valley will serve as a host site Monday for the Iowa High School Music Association State Jazz Band Festival. The festival is a state evaluative event of area Jazz bands. Participating schools will present a short set of music for a rating and then receive a clinic from a panel of three judges.  

      School’s performing at the NFV site include North Fayette Valley, Sumner-Fredricksburg, Denver, Union, and Decorah. The scheduled performances are as follows.

5 p.m. North Fayette Valley

5:40 p.m. Sumner-Fredricksburg

6:20 p.m. Union 2

7:40 p.m. Union 1

8:20 p.m. Denver

9 p.m. Decorah

    There is admission to attend the event. Preschool children and younger are admitted free.

Miniature exhibit to open Jan. 27

Miniature exhibit to open Jan. 27

      The miniature world of Mollie Wallace will open Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Fayette County Historical Center in West Union. The Des Moines artist will be on hand to describe her works beginning at 9:30 a.m.

      The local historical center will provide handheld magnifying glasses, allowing visitors a closer look of the miniatures. In addition, guests will be encouraged to participate in a scavenger hunt to locate miniatures in the many vignettes displayed.

      The exhibit will remain open through Saturday, Feb. 3. Additional information on the artist and her exhibit will be featured in the Union Echo Leader as the opening event draws near.

IRSPA Herring Scholarship applications open

      The West Union Area Retired School Personnel Educational Fund Inc. will once again be awarding the Dr. Louise P. Herring Scholarship to high school seniors who plan to further their education at college following high school graduation.

      While scholarships vary from year to year, the WU-IRSPA likes to give multiple scholarships in the range of $500 or more to each recipient. The recipient(s) will receive a letter of notification by May 1, 2024.

DNR to discuss potential rule changes

DNR to discuss potential rule changes

      The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is hosting a series of town hall-style meetings with local staff providing updates on recently completed hunting and trapping seasons, discussing possible changes to hunting and trapping rules and regulations, and addressing other topics as requested.

      “We want people to come out to these meetings, listen to the seasons reviews, ask questions and hear directly from our staff,” said Todd Bishop, chief of the Iowa DNR’s Wildlife Bureau. “Part of the meeting will be devoted to discussing potential rule changes and collecting feedback as we work through the rules process.”

Elgin book sale planned for April

Elgin book sale planned for April

The Friends of the Elgin Library are again planning an April Book Sale. If you have any quality adult fiction or non-fiction books, children’s books or complete puzzles that you have enjoyed and would like to share with others, they would welcome them for the book sale. Items being donated may be left at the Elgin Public Library during open hours until March 15.
