‘Welcome to Medicare’ seminar registration available

      “Welcome to Medicare,” a 90-minute seminar offered by the Gundersen Palmer Hospital and its SHIIP counselors, will be held from 10-11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 4. The seminar will be hosted by Friends of the West Union Community Library and will be held in the Heiserman Room, located in the lower level of the local library.

      The program will cover Medicare Part A and Part B benefits, the prescription drug benefit (Part D), Medicare Advantage plans (Part C) and Medicare supplement insurance. 

Learn about Parkinson’s disease series

      To learn about Parkinson’s disease, its effects, and possible treatments, register now to participate in “A Journey Through Parkinson’s Disease.” Fayette County Extension and Outreach, along with Iowa State’s Department of Kinesiology, and Human Sciences Extension and Outreach are sponsoring the series in Oelwein beginning Friday, May 3.  

JELL-O and utensil tribute 

      The Fayette County Historical Center’s tribute to JELL-O and kitchen utensils of the 1950s will be held Saturday. Those planning to attend the 9:30 a.m. program Saturday are invited to bring JELL-O recipes. In addition, JELL-O desserts will be available for tasting.

Hawkeye FD Breakfast Sunday 

      The Hawkeye Fire Department will host its annual omelet breakfast Sunday. Dine-in and carry-out services will be from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Hawkeye Community Hall. The 2023 menu includes a three-egg omelet, hash browns, toast, fruit, rolls, and coffee, juice or milk.

Free movie at the library

      Friends of the Library of West Union will host a free movie in the West Union Community Library Windsor Room at 1 p.m. Thursday.

      In the 2023 Lucas Film production, the daredevil archaeologist Indiana Jones races against time to retrieve a legendary dial that can change the course of history. Accompanied by his goddaughter, he soon finds himself squaring off against Jürgen Voller, a former Nazi who works for NASA.

Fair Queen Contest applications being accepted

      The Fayette County Fair is quickly approaching, which means the crowning of a new fair queen will soon be here. The application window opened Monday and will continue through Sunday, June 30.

      In addition to Fayette County communities nominating their candidates, other young ladies may again run at-large. 

      The coronation ceremony is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, at the Fayette County Fair in West Union. The traditional pie auction fundraiser will follow. Candidates must also be available for a mandatory information meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, at the fairgrounds.

Elgin Library holding open house to welcome director

      The Elgin Public Library will host an open house on Saturday to allow members of the community to meet its new director, Shane Butterfield.

      The open house will be held during regular business hours from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and will include refreshments. Butterfield began his role with the local library last week and is eager to get to know the community.

      The guest judges hopped into West Union Friday to review the 2024 Union Echo Leader Easter Decorating Contest entries. After grazing thorough the entries, the prizewinning selections were as follows.

‘Straight Story’ meet and greet

      In recognition of the 25^th anniversary of the Hollywood film “The Straight Story,” the Clermont Public Library is hosting an informal meet and greet with actor James Cada who played Danny Riordan in the film, and his wife Susanne Egli, Thursday, April 11. The event will begin at 10 a.m. at the tractor display, located next to TJ’s Pizza on Mill Street.

Board of health meeting Friday

      The Fayette County Board of Health will host a meeting at 8 a.m. Friday in Gundersen Palmer Lutheran Hospital Boeke Freed Room #2 in West Union. The local board of health meetings are open to the public unless otherwise specified.
