TigerHawk bowlers compete at Columbus

The TigerHawk boys’ and girls’ bowling squads were in competition Friday at Cadillac Lanes as they competed against Columbus Catholic.

The NFV boys fell by a final of 2,459-2,217, but were led by a trio of bowlers to hit the 300 mark.

Mason Brown-Gonnerman led the way with a 161-202-363, while Kelton Loomis (199-155-354) and James Baumler (158-181-339) also had strong performances.

TigerHawk boys go 1-2 as season end approaches

The TigerHawk boys had a tough week on the court as the team went 1-2, including a pair of Upper Iowa Conference losses to Postville and Kee. NFV did, however, pick up a 10-point win over New Hampton on the road.

Postville

The TH boys tipped off the week Tuesday, Jab. 28, with a 5-47 loss to the Pirates of Postville. The contest included a hot start by NFV, which led 10-4 after a quarter and trailed by only a point at the half.

The third quarter proved to be the difference in the game as the Pirates won the eight minutes by a 16-9 margin.

Leading the way for North Fayette Valley was Brennan Imoehl who posted a season-high 26 points. He, along with junior Kole Johnson, also grabbed six rebounds in the loss.

The 2020 Upper Iowa Conference Wrestling Tournament was won by North Fayette Valley, which scored235.5 points throughout the tournament and crowned six individual champions. NFV wrestlers win UIC title

North Fayette Valley hosted the 2020 Upper Iowa Conference Wrestling Tournament on Saturday and thanks to a powerful performance, was crowned the 2020 champion of the conference.

“We definitely wrestled up to our potential,” said Jacob Pedersen, head coach, following the strong performance that included a nearly 55-point spread between the TigerHawks and second place MFL/MarMac. “We got every match to go our way throughout the day. That usually doesn’t happen; there are usually a dozen or so matches that you wish you could have back.”

The NFV performance included a total of six conference champions, including Nick Koch (106), Levi Lauer (132), Joel Grimes (128), Alex Streif (152), Kale Rodgers (170), and Chase Cooley (182).

While NFV finished with a significant lead over the Bulldogs, Pedersen knew that his team would need to have a stellar day to earn the school’s first UIC trophy since 2015.

Warrior boys split UIC games

It was a busy week for the South Winn boys’ basketball team as the team competed in four games, going 1-3 and falling to 10-6 on the season. The Warriors dropped games against North Fayette Valley, Sumner-Fredericksburg (non-conference), and Cascade (non-conference) while beating Clayton Ridge on Senior Night.

The Warriors tipped off the week Tuesday, Jan. 21, against a NFV team that was fully healthy for the first time this season.

“I give NFV a lot of credit, they came out and played good fefense and hit some big shots,” said coach Blake Moen after a 60-48 loss. “We struggled in this game both hitting shots and playing interior defense and NFV took advantage of that.”

SW girls down Clayton Ridge on Senior Night

The South Winneshiek girls basketball team added win number two of the season last week, knocking off Clayton Ridge on Senior Night in Calmar. Facing a pair of tough area teams, the Warriors also dropped games to North Fayette Valley and to Sumner-Fredericksburg.

The Warriors began the week with a Tuesday night (Jan. 21) matchup against the TigerHawks of North Fayette Valley.

NFV got out to a fast start, leading 11-0, but South Winn was able to get on a small run to cut the lead to 11-5.

Throughout the remainder of the game, the lady TigerHawks were able to get hot and went on to down the Warriors, 66-22.

“NFV out-hustled us on many occasions during this game,” said coach Kayla Ross after the loss. “Defensively, we were not helping each other out as much as we should have been and could not defend their three-point shots.”

Sophomore Janessa Zweibahmer led the Warriors with 10 points, while senior Liz Tieskoetter had a team-high six rebounds.

The North Fayette Valley bowlers hit the lanes Friday afternoon at Panther Lanes in Tripoli as the TigerHawks and Denver Cyclones did battle.

The NFV girls picked up the wins over Denver as Emily Guyer bowled a 177-196-373 to lead the team. Hailey Wurzer (160-167-327) and Erika Woodson (121-180-301) also scored over 300 for the TH girls.

Other competing bowlers included Shelby Holden (107-91-198), Breanna Baumler (99-96-195), and Sierra Kemp (74-93-167)

TigerHawk wrestlers busy with duals, go 3-4

It was a busy week for the TigerHawk wrestlers as the team competed in a total of seven duals, going 3-4 against a tough lineup of teams.

North Fayette Valley began the week Tuesday, Jan. 21, at North Linn where the team picked up wins over Central and North Linn, but fell to No. 5-ranked Independence.

At 132 pounds, Levi Lauer went 3-0 on the day and picked up a pair of falls to lead the TigerHawks.

Saturday, NFV headed to Denver to participate in the Denver Dual tournament. The TigerHawks went 1-3 on the day with a win over Sioux City East and losses to Dyersville Beckman, Mid-Prairie, and No. 8-ranked Denver (1A).

Colton Schupbach led the way for the TigerHawks as he went 3-0 on the day including a pair of pins.

The TigerHawk girls’ basketball team got back to its winning ways last week as it won three straight after losing four in a row the previous week.

NFV picked up wins against South Winneshiek, Oelwein, and West Central to improve to 9-6 on the season.

NFV boys make it five straight with perfect week

The North Fayette Valley boys’ basketball team pushed its winning streak to five and improved its overall record to 9-6 thanks to a 4-0 week that included wins over South Winneshiek, Oelwein, West Central, and North Butler.

South Winneshiek

The TigerHawks kicked off the week on Tuesday (Jan. 21) with a big win over one of the top teams in the Upper Iowa Conference, South Winneshiek.

With a healthy lineup, NFV and SW kept it close in the first half with the TigerHawks holding a one-point advantage at the half, but the TigerHawk strength showed in the second half as the home team pulled away for a 60-48 win.

Junior Kole Johnson had a game-high 18 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists to lead the way for NFV.
