NFV bowlers take on Oelwein

The North Fayette Valley bowling team competed Thursday afternoon in West Union as the TigerHawks hosted Oelwein at Lilac Lanes.

The NFV girls got into the win column for the first time this year as the team defeated the Huskies, 1,970 to 978.

The girls were led by Emily Guyer’s 149-146-295. Hailer Wurzer (156-130-286) and Erika Woodson (131-134-265) also contributed heavily to the TigerHawk win, while Shelby Holden (118-119-237), Sierra Kemp (104-97-201), and Breanna Baumler (99-97-196) also participated.

Barker Scores for NFV were 118, 133, 139, 128, and 168.

The North Fayette Valley boys basketball team split a pair of contests last week, falling in nonconference play to Waukon on Monday (Jan. 13) but beating Upper Iowa Conference foe Central on Thursday.

The TigerHawks hosted the Waukon Indians in West Union on Monday, falling 72-55.

“Ultimately, this game came down to a stretch in the late first (quarter) to midway through the second quarter,” said coach Matt Krambeer following the loss. “We turned it over on eight of nine possessions and Waukon scored on nearly every one of those turnovers.”

NFV was led by junior Kole Johnson’s season-high 19 points, while senior Brennan Imoehl had 11 boards.

The North Fayette Valley girls’ basketball team dropped a pair of games last week to fall to a season record of 6-6. The TigerHawks lost to a strong Waukon team on Monday, Jan. 13, before dropping a 23-point game to Central on Thursday evening.

The TigerHawk girls traveled to Waukon on Monday evening, falling 60-52 to a strong Indian squad.

NFV wrestlers go 6-0 in dual action

The North Fayette Valley wrestling team was in action twice last week as it traveled to East Buchanan High School on Tuesday and to MFL/MarMac on Thursday – both for quad action.

East Buchanan

On Tuesday evening, Jan. 14, the TigerHawk grapplers traveled to Winthrop for quad action against Bellevue, Wapsie Valley, and East Buchanan. NFV left with three dual wins over three tough area teams.

Against East Buchanan, the TigerHawks got falls from Nick Koch (106), Braeden Ellis (132), Alex Streif (160), and Dylan Durnan (170) as they cruised to a 48-30 win over the Buccaneers.

Against Bellevue, NFV got pins from Nick Koch, Braeden Ellis (126), Dillion Sparrgrove (132), Alex Streif, and Kale Rodgers (182) enroute to a 51-24 win.

In the final dual of the day, the TigerHawks knocked off a tough Wapsie Valley team, 52-30. TigerHawks to win their respective matches via fall included Nick Koch (113), Braeden Ellis (126), Alex Streif (152), Dylan Durnan, Kale Rodgers, Tanner Guyer (195), and Isaiah Corbin (220).

Warrior boys down pair of UIC foes

The South Winn boys’ basketball team improved to 7-3 on the season after a pair of Upper Iowa Conference wins last week. The Warriors defeated Central on Tuesday, Jan. 7, before downing Kee on the road on Friday.

After dropping three of their last four games, the Warrior boys were able to get back on track at home by downing the Central Warriors, 65-25.

“I was proud of our guys to bounce back and get a good conference win,” said coach Blake Moen after the win. “Our defensive intensity from start to finish in this game was great and really set the pace for us early.”

The young South Winn girls’ basketball team dropped a pair of Upper Iowa Conference matchups last week, falling to Central and Kee.

Central

The Warriors fell to a tough Central team on Tuesday, Jan. 7, in Calmar as the 9-2 foe downed South Winn by a score of 50-19.

“This was the best first half of basketball I’ve seen from the girls all year,” said coach Kayla Ross. “The girls played solid defense the majority of the game and hustled nonstop.”

South Winn trailed the rival Warriors 6-5 after the opening quarter. Central went on to extend its lead to 17-7 at the half before getting hot in the third quarter to lead 40-11.

The Warriors were led by senior Liz Tieskoetter with nine points. Mary Frana and Janessa Zweibahmer led the team in rebounding with nine apiece. Tieskoetter and freshman Clare Courtney each had four steals in the tough loss.

“This is the most I’ve seen them play as a team with toughness yet this season,” closed Ross. “It makes me very proud!”

The Warriors traveled to Lansing on Friday to take on the 7-4 Kee Hawks. South Winn struggled in the contest, falling 64-35.

“This was not our best game, that’s for sure,” said Coach Ross after the loss. “We did not execute on offense and the amount of turnovers we had is what lost us the game.”

NFV bowlers bested by Waukon

The TigerHawk bowlers retuned to the lanes Friday afternoon to take on Waukon for the team’s first competition since the holiday break.

The girls lost to the Indians, 1,957-1,735. Waukon won the first round, 1,304-1,082, while the teams each had 653 in the Bake Rotation.

Erika Woodson rolled a team-high 151-129-280, while Emily Guyer had a 105-145-250. Sierra Kemp ended up with a 95-101-196, while Shelby Holden ha a 92-88-180 and Riley Magner had a 77-99-176.

The loss drops the TigerHawk girls to 1-8-11 on the season.

NFV halted by two UIC-leading teams

The TigerHawk boys’ basketball team faced a gauntlet of opponents last week as NFV took on two 9-2 (7-1) teams that are both currently part of a three-way tie for the lead of the Upper Iowa Conference in MFL/MarMac and Turkey Valley (third is South Winneshiek).

On Tuesday, Jan. 7, the TigerHawks headed to Monona for a battle with the MFL/MarMac Bulldogs.

“It was a tough, hard-fought game that came down to the last possession,” said coach Matt Krambeer after the tough, 60-54 loss. “We led by two with four minutes to go in a back-and-forth game. MFL (Mar/Mac) made enough free throws down the stretch to keep us at bay.”

The North Fayette Valley girls’ basketball team fell twice last week as it took on the two teams that are tied for the Upper Iowa Conference lead, MFL/MarMac and Turkey Valley.

The TigerHawks saw a five-game win streak come to an end on Tuesday, Jan. 7, when No. 5-ranked MFL/MarMac (11-2) defeated them, 56-36.

The two local teams kept it even over the first eight minutes, but the Bulldogs began to pull away in the second quarter as they lead 25-18 as the teams went to the half.

NFV wrestlers go 3-1 at UIC Duals

North Fayette Valley wrestlers competed in the 2020 Upper Iowa Conference Duals on Thursday in Calmar, going 3-1 on the evening, including a pair of shutouts.

In the three wins over Tripoli, Clayton Ridge, and Postville, the TigerHawks outscored the opposing teams by a combined 224-9. NFV’s lone loss of the day came by a single point to South Winneshiek.

The TigerHawks opened with the Clayton Ridge Eagles. With help from pins by Braeden Ellis (120), Levi Lauer (132), and Kale Rodgers (182), NFV won the dual by a score of 76-0.
