The Warriors were rolling in all aspects of the game on Friday night in Postville as the team set a new record for total offense on its way to a 66-6 win over the Pirates.

“We were able to get into rhythm offensively midway through the first quarter,” said coach Jason Ohrt after the big win. “Our offensive line protected very well, helping us set a new school record with 641 total yards from scrimmage.”

Zach Taylor got the scoring started in the first quarter as he rushed in for a 10-yard touchdown.

Postville responded with a long, 58-yard passing touchdown to tie the game up.

From there, it was all Warriors who put up 60 unanswered points throughout the next 3 ½ quarters.

The 2019 season has been a tough one thus far for the young South Winneshiek volleyball team as the Warriors fell to 0-13 last week, including a 0-29 mark in individual sets.

North Fayette Valley

The team began the week Tuesday, Sept. 10, at North Fayette Valley. The Warriors went down in consecutive sets, 25-9, 25-23, and 25-21. Individual statistics were not available at press time.

Turkey Valley

On Thursday evening, the Warriors took on Turkey Valley in Jackson Junction. South Winn fell by scores of 25-19, 25-15, and 25-15.

“I don’t think the score really reflects how close this battle felt. The Warriors put up one heck of a fight,” said coach Glenna Munuswamy after the loss. “We had a lot of great attacks that were just missing. This was by far our best play this season. If we can find the kind of intensity we have against our rival for every match, we’ll start to see some success.”

West Central lost a football game, 54-0 to 2-1 Central City, but the Devils looked better in many facets of the game.

“We definitely did some things better,” stated head coach Steve Milder. “We knew we’d have trouble scoring on them, but our offense was clicking better on the ground.”

WC was without Logan Westcott due to an injury and Aiden Nelson was ill most of the week, but he still managed to rush 19 times for 101 yards against the Wildcat’s very tough defense; he also caught two of the Devils’ five completed passes for another 23 yards. Brandon Cushion netted 43 yards on the ground with his 11 carries.

A dominant defense and a varied offense helped NFV craft a workman-like 26-0 victory Friday in Sumner.

In terms of scoring, it was a close contest for most of the game, with a pair of fourth-quarter TDs giving the NFV a comfortable edge.

However, the TigerHawks really controlled the game. The defense only allowed four first downs. Last year, Sumner-Fred only made three first downs in the Cougars, 26-22 victory, but big plays and NFV miscues led to the loss.
