NFV softball cleared a major hurdle Monday (June 8) when it swept Clayton Ridge, 12-0 and 13-1, in West Union.

Before the games TigerHawk head coach Bob Lape said, “If we want to have any chance of contending for the UIC title, we have to get by Clayton Ridge.”

The man with 549 career victories also commented, “It’s always hard to beat a team two games in a row.

However, the TigerHawks accomplished that with a pair of resounding victories.

Swim Team opens with Decorah and rain

 

 

The West Union Swim Team opened the season by meeting powerhouse Decorah Tuesday, June 9, in West Union, then getting rained out Thursday against Elkader/Strawberry Point; no makeup date for the meet had been set by press time.

Decorah with its 100+ swimmers was too deep for West Union, claiming a 532-200 victory.

W.U. coach Meredith Murray commented, “Our kids swam well and showed much improvement from last year.”

Jekyll-Hyde week for NFV BB

It was very much a Jekyll-Hyde week for NFV baseball as it went 2-3. When the TigerHawks were good, they were very good, but errors made some of the scores look very lopsided.

Head coach Dan Hovden assessed the week, saying, “Too many errors and the mental ones were as big as the physical ones.”

The errors led to 22 unearned runs in five games.

The South Winneshiek boys’ golf team made its State Golf Meet debut Friday and Saturday, May 29-30, in Ames. The Warriors took third as a team, shooting 645 over the two-day, 36-hole competition. The South Winn boys’ golf team took to the course for the final time this season at the State Golf Meet on Friday and Saturday in Ames.

The team finished third among the state’s best in Class 2A, shooting 645. Panorama took the top prize after blazing the course to the tune of 616 strokes, while Kuemper Catholic took runner-up honors with its 36-hole total of 633.

“For our first trip to State as a team, we finished well,” noted coach Doug Schweinefus. “There are always those shots you wish you could do over, but these six boys represented themselves and South Winneshiek very well.”

It was all Warriors Wednesday night in Calmar when the cross-county rival Decorah baseball team came to town. South Winn picked up the 3-0 win behind Jordan Rommes’ complete game, 10-strikeout performance on the mound.

Making his second start of the young season, Rommes did not allow a run to score throughout the duration of the game, keeping his season earned run average at 0.

The Warriors were clicking early when Tanner Kuennen drove in Rodney Schwartzhoff in the opening inning, giving South Winn a 1-0 lead.

The South Winneshiek softball team played in front of a home crowd Monday, June 1, for the first time in the young 2015 season. The girls took advantage of the opportunity to impress in front of family and friends by picking up two wins over Starmont in the doubleheader.

Freshman Taylor Bucheit was on the pitcher’s mound for South Winn, going the full eight innings to get the win. Bucheit did not allow a single earned run while ringing up 16 of the 24 batters she faced.

Bucheit contributed to her own cause by driving in an RBI in the third inning.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, it was senior Brittany Shindelar who drove in the game-winning RBI and sealed the win.

Bright season ahead for Blue Devils

 

Head Coach Nick Robinson’s first two softball seasons with the West Central Blue Devils have been pretty underwhelming.

 

Robinson, a 2009 graduate of West Central, inherited a team that hasn’t had a winning season since 2001, when the Blue Devils went 16-15. Since 2006-2007, the most games the school has won in a season is 11, which they accomplished in back-to-back years in 2011 and 2012; last year the Devils finished with a 7-28 record. In fact, they have won just 59 games in the last nine years.

 

However, this year could finally be the year they break through that plateau with sound defense, patient hitting and pitchers that throw strikes and end their streak of 14 losing seasons.

 

The veteran coach believes what has hurt the program the most is inconsistent numbers, especially when it comes to having experienced upperclassmen to mix with talented younger players. For West Central, the lineup always seems to be on the younger side of the spectrum.

North Fayette Valley went 5-1 in its first full week of baseball. Included in the list were wins over Clayton Ridge/Central, one of the preseason UIC favorites, and sixth-ranked New Hampton.

Along the way, Sam Danker accomplished an unusual feat, striking out 17 Turkey Valley batters – in just five innings! That means he fanned two over the normal limit. That happened because a pair of Trojans reached base on third-strike pitches that eluded the catcher.

The week started with a sweep of Turkey Valley Monday, June 1, in West Union. The TigerHawks won both games by identical, scores of 8-3.

Moser 14th at State Golf

North Fayette Valley junior Bailey Moser finished 14th in the individual competition at the State Golf Tournament Monday and Tuesday (June 1-2) in Marshalltown.

The TigerHawk junior had a tough first day, carding a 50-44-94. That placed her 22nd overall for the day.

Head coach Robin Madole remarked, “Moser started rough with a 7-over-par on the first two holes.”

Madole went on to say, “I can’t say enough about her mental toughness. After the bad start, she came back to par the final three holes of the day.”
