Duane Alfred Schmidt was born August 26, 1939 in Oelwein, Iowa, the son of Alfred Carl & Margaret Anna (Lauck) Schmidt.  He grew up in the Arlington area and graduated from Arlington High School in the class of 1957.  Duane joined the U.S. Army and served between the Korean and Vietnam Wars as a helicopter mechanic, stateside and in Korea.
