Brett Hanson, age 51, of Waucoma, IA died Sunday, January 2, 2022, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in LaCrosse, WI. 

Friends may greet the family from 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 6, 2022, at the Waucoma Event Center where there will be a 7:00 p.m. memorial service with Rev. Brett was born on September 25, 1970, to Robert and Norma Jean (Schatz)Hanson on an American Air Force base in Okinawa, Japan, and he was welcomed home by two brothers — Blaine and Bryce — and the three Hanson boys had a tight bond that lasted a lifetime.

Richard H. Meyer died Friday, January 7, 2022, in his armchair at home in West Union. He was 89.

Richard Henry Meyer was born April 29, 1932, in West Union. As a lifelong member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Eldorado, he was baptized May 22, 1932, and confirmed April 14, 1946. He grew up on a family farm northeast of Eldorado. He attended country school through eighth grade at Dover No. 4 Willow Springs, and graduated from West Union High School in 1950. From 1953 to 1955, he served in the U.S. Army, traveling around the country to military sites in Kansas, Maryland, New Jersey, Washington, California and Nevada. As a member of the 573rd Ordnance Company, he witnessed the testing of atomic bombs at Camp Desert Rock northwest of Las Vegas. In later years, he was a cancer survivor, one of many who were “downwinders” from the atomic tests.

Robert Brandt, age 94, of Ossian IA, died on Sunday, December 26, 2021 at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, IA.  

The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 6, 2022 at Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia, IA with Lay Minister Daryl Schultz presiding. 

Visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to the service at the church. The Schluter-Balik Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Robert Kenneth Brandt was born on March 14, 1927, in rural Castalia, Iowa, the son of Walter and Annetta (Huisinga) Brandt. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia. He attended Castalia area schools until graduating in 1945. Robert married Marlus Engelhardt on January 25, 1948 at Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia.

Leslie A. Nostvick, 63, of rural Fayette, Iowa, died on Monday morning, January 3, 2022, at her home surrounded by her family.

Celebration of Life:  7:00 p.m. Saturday, January 8, 2022, at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Maynard, with Chaplain Pat Malanaphy of St. Croix Hospice officiating. The family will greet friends and relatives at the funeral home from 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be directed to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Henry A. Thompson, 80, of Randalia, died, Friday, December 31, 2021, at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette.

In Loving Memory of a wonderful mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend.

Darlene Elaine (Hellum) Johnson, 81, was born March 21, 1940 in Postville, Iowa, to Kenneth and Viola Hellum and died at her home in Elgin, surrounded by her family on December 28, 2021, after a short, but painful battle with lung cancer.  Darlene had a deep love for her family, the community of Elgin, and the Elgin Lutheran Church.  She had a tremendous faith in God that she was proud to share with family and friends. 

Darlene was baptized on May 12, 1940, at the Marion Lutheran Church, in Gunder. She graduated from Luana High School in 1958 and was united in marriage to Keith Merton Johnson on November 23, 1958, at the Postville Lutheran Church. To this union four children became a part of her life.

A.W. Martin, 95, of Fayette, died Saturday, December 25, 2021, at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette.

Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, services will be held at a later date. Service date and time will be posted once they become available. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in A.W.’s name to the Salvation Army or a charity of the donor’s choice. Becker & Son Funeral Home in Fayette is assisting A.W.’s family. A.W. Martin (Albert William) was born August 17, 1926, in Marion Township, Linn County, Iowa, the son of Albert William Martin, Sr. and Ida Marie (Neilson) Martin. He was the second child of the family with Louise three years older. His two brothers were Loyd, born 17 months later, and Paul born 16 months after Loyd. The three brothers were dressed alike and many people thought they were triplets.

June Walvatne

 

June Elaine Walvatne, daughter of Clarence and Alvina (Zickler) Wardell was born June 4, 1930 in Arlington, IA. She was born again in April of 1948 through the truth of John 3:16. She gathered with the Christians at the West Union Gospel Hall for over 70 years where she seldom missed a Sunday.

On June 15, 1950, June was united in marriage to Vernel Eugene Walvatne in Fayette. To this union 8 children were born. In their early years of marriage, she was a seamstress doing alterations for various individuals. She also baked and decorated wedding cakes. Above all, she was a homemaker. She loved to cook for people including but not limited to family, friends and neighbors. She also enjoyed gardening, having a large garden right up to the end. 

June passed away at the age of 91 on December 29, 2021 at Gundersen Palmer Lutheran Hospital in West Union, IA as a result of pneumonia.

Gaylord Converse

Gaylord Converse

 

 

Gaylord Fred Converse was born on July 13, 1946, at Waterloo, IA.  He died at the age of 75 on December 25, 2021.  He was the son of Nelson Forrest and Juliette Rose (Heisler) Converse.   He was baptized at the Frederika Methodist Church.  

He and his family moved several times in his youth as they rented farms in Iowa and his father’s birthplace in Illinois.  When Gaylord was in fifth grade, the family purchased their family farm in rural Sumner.  Gaylord was confirmed at the Sumner Methodist Church and graduated from Sumner High School in 1965.  He was co-captain of his football team and received all-conference honors.  He sang in the All-State Chorus and was also chosen as the national soloist at the National FFA Convention in Kansas City.
