Jim Stuart

 

Jim Stuart, 69, of Elgin, Iowa passed away Monday, September 6, 2021, at his home in Elgin.

Norman Jimmy Stuart, the son of JoAnn McEwan, was born January 20, 1952 in Provo, Utah. His mother married Donald Cole when Jim was three years old and Donald became his dad. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1969 and served in Viet Nam. He was honorably discharged on November 1, 1975. After serving in the Army, Jim joined the Sheet Metal Workers Union (Local 312) in Salt Lake City, Utah. He started out as an apprentice and worked his way up to Journeyman. He worked as a Foreman and ran many of the assigned jobs as the Boss. Jim retired from the Local 312 after over thirty years and moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. He joined the Sheet Metal Workers Union (Local 88) in Las Vegas and worked for six more years before his final retirement in 2009. After this retirement, he moved to Elgin, Iowa.

Jeanne McDermott

Jeanne McDermott, 97, of Panora, passed away Tuesday, August 31, 2021 at the Guthrie County Hospital, in Guthrie Center, Iowa after a long and caring life. She was the mother of seven: Virginia (Jim) Rasmussen of Manilla; Roberta (Allen) Mittelsted of West Union; Patricia McDermott of West Des Moines; John (Marsha) McDermott of Panora; Tim (Carol) McDermott of Jamaica, IA; Mike (Jackie) McDermott of Tinley Park, IL; and Bill (Deb) McDermott of Panora.

Linda Hoblit

Linda Lou Hoblit passed away peacefully on September 8, 2021 at Copper Creek Assisted Living in West Union, Iowa.  There will be a private family graveside service in Rock Falls, Iowa.

Linda Lou Hoblit was born on October 12, 1945 at Mercy Hospital, Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of John and Emily (Bobek) Byl. 

Linda grew up in Mason City and graduated from Mason City High School in 1964.  She was united in marriage to John Hoblit on November 7, 1965.  He preceded her in death on January 1, 2021. 

Linda worked at various jobs in her career.  She worked at the Charles MacNider Art Museum in Mason City, the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City and as administrative assistant at KOEL radio in Oelwein.

Gregory Wenthold

 

Gregory Arnold Wenthold, age 99, passed away Thursday, September 2, 2021 at Winneshiek County Medical Center. Greg was born on January 31, 1922 in Festina, Iowa, and was one of twelve children born to the late Henry and Margaret (Kleve) Wenthold. 

 

Greg was a quiet and gentle man. He was strong in his faith, serving as usher for the church for many years. He was generous to his church and community. He was loved by those he met.

 

Greg was a skilled mechanic. He was very dedicated to his job at Reilly Construction, working there for 65 years keeping the equipment operating. He spent many of his early years with them working “on the road”.  In fact, Greg invented a rock crusher that crushes the concrete from the road allowing it to be reused.

Kathryn M. (Bullerman) Uhlenhake, 97, of Ossian, died Saturday, August 28, 2021, at the Ossian Senior Hospice, Ossian, Iowa, after a short illness. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m., Saturday, September 4, 2021 at the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Ossian, IA. Interment was in the St. Francis de Sales Cemetery, Ossian, Iowa.

Kathryn was born May 18, 1924, in rural Calmar, the youngest daughter of Joseph and Catherine (Timp) Bullerman, and the last to survive. She was baptized at the St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar, Iowa

Ty Schmidt, 54, of Janesville, Iowa, died on Thursday, August 26, 2021. Funeral Service were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 8, 2021 at St. John Lutheran Church, Arlington, with Rev. Margaret Yackel-Juleen officiating. Visitation was from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Arlington and for one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday. Military Honors by the U.S. Army Honor Guard were conducted following the funeral service.

William D. “Bill” Orr, 91, of Maynard, Iowa died Monday night, August 30, 2021, at UnityPoint Health – Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa.

Funeral Service were held  10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 4, 2021, at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Maynard with Rev. Mike Jager officiating. Visitation was held 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, September 3, 2021, and for one hour before the service on Saturday at the funeral home. Interment was at the Dunham Grove Cemetery, Randalia, Iowa.

Thomas (Tom) Eugene Smith, 64, of Fayette Iowa, passed away suddenly Monday, August 23, 2021 at Gundersen Medical Center in Lacrosse Wisconsin.

Tom was born to Richard and Marjorie Smith on November 6, 1956 in Cresco, Iowa. 

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Marjorie. 

Tom is survived by his wife, Diana Lee Smith of Fayette, Iowa; brothers, Steve Smith (Karolyn) of Osage, Iowa ; Maury Smith (Dana) of Denver, Colorado; sister, Cindy Durscher (Steve Pleggenkuhle) of West Union, Iowa; stepson, Andrew Richardson (Alison Votava) of Jordan Minnesota; stepdaughter, Amber Richardson (Luke Rothering) of Harmony Minnesota; step-grandsons, Micah, Bronson, Calvin, Emmett, Cameron and Corbin; and step-granddaughters, Luciana, Violet, Abigail, Brenna, and Delaynie. 

Tom enjoyed camping, sports, and spending time with his dog, Charlie. He specifically had great love for the Steelers.

Gladys Harriet Nelson, 92, of West Union, Iowa passed away on Saturday, August 28, 2021 at Stoney Brook Village in West Union, Iowa. Gladys “Khaki”, daughter of Harry L. and Helen (Ostlie) Yauslin was born April 14, 1929 in Fayette County, near Clermont, Iowa. She was baptized into the Lutheran Faith at West Clermont Lutheran Church, Clermont, Iowa and confirmed at West Clermont Lutheran Church. Khaki attended Riverside Country School through the eighth grade and graduated from Clermont High School. She studied one semester at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.

Lana (Griebenow) Hespen

 

Lana M. Hespen, 71 of Syracuse, NE passed away on Thursday, August 26, 2021, at the Syracuse Hospital. She was born on June 13, 1950, to Richard & Esther (Paulson) Griebenow in Clermont, IA. In 1968 she graduated from Valley High School in Clermont.  Lana went to cosmetology school and worked for some years in that line of work.

Lana married Rodney Hespen on May 25, 1991, in Syracuse. She worked at Nashua Paper Products in Omaha for 36 years.

Lana liked to travel and got to visit her nephew, Christian, and his family in Norway.  Her first birthday was celebrated in Los Angeles, California while the family was visited her aunt and uncle there.  Her favorite trips when she was younger were to visit her aunt and uncle in Yakima, WA and their son Billy.
