Sister of Betty Spies dies on May 7

Diane Holmes, 77, of Perry, formerly of West Union, died Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at Rowley Memorial Masonic Home in Perry.  

Graveside services were held at Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry on Tuesday, May 14. 

Diane Marie (Schmelzer) Holmes was born July 18, 1935, to George A. and Edna (Bloomfield) Schmelzer on the family farm near West Union.  

She attended school in West Union and graduated from Paris Beauty Academy.  

In 1952, she was united in marriage with Leo Shori. They traveled for the next 20 years in the military, including two tours in Germany.  

Diane moved to Perry in 1972 and worked at Woodward State Hospital.  

She married Richard “Dick” Holmes in 1977, and they made their home in Perry.

Services held yesterda for Alison Jo Garvin, 25

Funeral services for Alison J. Garvin, 25, of West Union will were held at 10:30 a.m. yesterday (Wednesday) at United Methodist Church in West Union with the Rev. Galen Smith officiating.

Burial will follow in West Union Cemetery.

Visitation was set for Tuesday, May 14, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Burnham-Wood Funeral Home in West Union.

Burnham-Wood & S.K. Rogers Funeral Home of West Union is in charge of the arrangements.

Alison died Saturday, May 11, 2013, at her parents' home in West Union.

Alison Jo Garvin was born Dec. 1, 1987, to Scott and Joleen (Pape) Garvin at Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union. 

She was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye and confirmed at Bethel Presbyterian Church in West Union.

Funeral services for Sister Maria Goretti Dullard, PVBM, 78, of Dubuque were held Thursday, April 25, at Mount Loretto Motherhouse in Dubuque. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Key West.

Sister Maria Goretti was born Mary Thomasine Dullard on July 30, 1934, in West Union to Walter and Mary Dullard.

Her brother, Joseph Dullard, preceded her in death.

Mildred Ruth-Dorthea Lohr, 97, of West Union, Iowa passed away on April 30, 2013, at Traditions Assisted Living in West Union.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, May 4, 2013, at Zion Lutheran Church in West Union, Iowa. Burial will follow at West Union Cemetery.

A public visitation will be held on Friday, May 3, 2013, from 4 pm until 7 pm at Burnham-Wood Funeral Home in West Union.

Memorial service held for Jane (Jirak) Gilb

Jane (Jirak) Gilb, 59, of Lakeville, Minn., formerly of Waucoma, died Friday, March 29, 2013, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn., following a battle with cancer.

A memorial service was held Saturday, April 6, at Family of Christ Lutheran Church in Lakeville, Minn.

A private burial will be held at a later date in Lucan, Minn.

Jane (Jirak) “Janie” Gilb, daughter of Jim and Barbara (Riha) Jirak, was born June 9, 1953, in New Hampton.

She attended grade school at St. Mary’s in Waucoma and graduated from Turkey Valley High School in Jackson Junction. She attended the Minnesota School of Business in Mankota, Minn., and she later earned her master’s degree.

On July 2, 1977, Jane was united in marriage with Roger Gilb at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Little Turkey. The couple welcomed two sons into their family.

Shirley M. Ohloff, 81, of Castalia died Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at Good Samaritan Society – Postville. 

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 27, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville. The Rev. Steve Brackett officiated.

Burial was in the Postville Cemetery, Postville.

Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Postville, assisted the family with arrangements. 

Born Feb. 7, 1932, to Otto and Irma (Robey) Olson in Waukon, Shirley was baptized on March 7, 1932, at St. John Lutheran Church in Waukon and confirmed on December 1, 1946, at Old East Paint Creek Church in Waterville. 

After her graduation from Waukon High School in 1950, Shirley sold theater tickets at the Waukon Theater.

Word has been received that Margery K. (Molumby) Borrell, 95, of Eagan, Minn., died Nov. 10, 2012.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Nov. 15, 2012, in Rosemount, Minn.

J.S. Klecatsky and Sons Funeral Home in Eagan handled the arrangements.

Memorial service set for May 25

Karen K. Sensor, 65, died Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at her home in Harlingen, Texas, after an eight-month battle with pancreatic cancer.

A memorial service will be held at Randalia United Methodist Church at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 25.

Karen Kae Sensor, the daughter of Lois Bierschenk and Harry Scoles, was born Aug. 28, 1947.

Raised in Nashua, she graduated from high school in 1965.  During her high school years she played the flute in the band and sang solos at The Little Brown Church in the Vale.  

Karen graduated from Hamilton Business College and the University of Northern Iowa. 

She and Donn Sensor were united in marriage on May 24, 1969, at First Congregational Church in Nashua.  The couple had two children.  

Karen was an elementary teacher in Cedar Falls and more recently a teacher of children with behavior disabilities in Clinton.  She retired in 2001.

Wei Kong Chang, M.D., 70, of Sumner died Sunday, April 21, 2013, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 25, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner.

Visitation is 4-7 p.m.  today (Wednesday) at St. John Lutheran Church and for one hour preceding services at the church on Thursday. 

Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner is assisting Dr. Chang’s family.

Celebration of Life held for Del Hummel

 

A Celebration of Life for Delbert E. Hummel, 78, of West Union was held Tuesday, April 23, at Burnham-Wood Funeral Home in West Union.

Burnham-Wood & S.K. Rogers Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Del’s death occurred Friday, April 19, 2013, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

Delbert Elton “Del” Hummel was born Nov. 20, 1934, to Elton and Marion (Clark) Hummel in Aurora. 

After his graduation from Arlington High School in 1953, he continued his education, earning a degree from DeVry Institute of Technology in a home study program.

Del proudly served in the United States National Guard for six years. 

On March 3, 1960, he was wed to Ursula Rohrig at United Methodist Church in Fairbank.

Del worked as a television and electronics technician for West Union Appliance for 20 years and at Wayne & Del's Electronics in West Union for 20 years.
