Kathryn Rhines, 77, of Hazleton passed away Monday, September 13, 2021.  Visitation was from 10:00 a.m. to Noon on Monday, September 20, 2021 at the Geilenfeld-Buehner Funeral Home in Oelwein.  Funeral services began at Noon.  Interment was in Union Cemetery at Aurora.  A memorial fund has been established.  For condolences, please visit www.geilenfeldfh.com.

Kathryn Ann Rhines was born in Decorah on April 14, 1944 to parents Leo and Elsie (Junge) Domero.  She attended schools at Sumner, Eldorado and North Fayette.  On November 21, 2000 she was united in marriage with Delbert Rhines Jr. in Independence.  Kathy had been employed with Maple Crest Manor, the Good Samaritan Home and Iowa Turkey Products.  She enjoyed reading, sewing, going for drives and visiting with family and friends.

Robert Rowland Peters, 84, of Cedar Falls, passed away on Monday, September 13, 2021, at MercyOne/Sartori Hospital of Cedar Falls.  He was born in Brainard, Iowa, on November 22, 1936, son of Joseph and Vivian (Rowland) Peters.  Bob graduated from Elgin High School with the Class of 1954 then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp in 1955, serving at Camp Pendleton, California.  Following an honorable discharge, Bob returned to Iowa where he married his high school sweetheart, Nancy Larson on June 5, 1958 at the Elgin Lutheran Church.  He was owner/operator of L&M Transmission in Cedar Falls.

  Bob was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings: Genevieve Olson, William Peters, Kathleen Peters, Joseph Peters and Donald Peters.  He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Nancy; son, Robert (Connie) Peters of Grundy Center; grandson, Tanner (Madison) Peters of Waterloo; and many extended family members and good friends.

  Laura Kuboushek, age 96 of Calmar, IA, died on Monday, September 6, 2021 at Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, IA. The Mass of Christian Burial was held at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 11, 2021 in Spillville, Iowa with clergy Rev. Daniel Knipper and Deacon Dan O’Brien. Interment was in the St. Wenceslaus Cemetery. Arrangements by Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Calmar, Iowa

Laura was born May 2, 1925 on a farm near St. Lucas, the daughter of Hugo and Barbara (Hackman) Rausch.  Laura received her education at St. Luke’s Catholic School in St. Lucas, Iowa.

Jim Stuart

Jim Stuart, 69, of Elgin, Iowa passed away Monday, September 6, 2021, at his home in Elgin.

Norman Jimmy Stuart, the son of JoAnn McEwan, was born January 20, 1952 in Provo, Utah. His mother married Donald Cole when Jim was three years old and Donald became his dad. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1969 and served in Viet Nam. He was honorably discharged on November 1, 1975. After serving in the Army, Jim joined the Sheet Metal Workers Union (Local 312) in Salt Lake City, Utah. He started out as an apprentice and worked his way up to Journeyman. He worked as a Foreman and ran many of the assigned jobs as the Boss. Jim retired from the Local 312 after over thirty years and moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. He joined the Sheet Metal Workers Union (Local 88) in Las Vegas and worked for six more years before his final retirement in 2009. After this retirement, he moved to Elgin, Iowa.

Jeanne McDermott, 97, of Panora, passed away Tuesday, August 31, 2021 at the Guthrie County Hospital, in Guthrie Center, Iowa after a long and caring life. She was the mother of seven: Virginia (Jim) Rasmussen of Manilla; Roberta (Allen) Mittelsted of West Union; Patricia McDermott of West Des Moines; John (Marsha) McDermott of Panora; Tim (Carol) McDermott of Jamaica, IA; Mike (Jackie) McDermott of Tinley Park, IL; and Bill (Deb) McDermott of Panora.

Linda Hoblit

Linda Lou Hoblit passed away peacefully on September 8, 2021 at Copper Creek Assisted Living in West Union, Iowa.  There will be a private family graveside service in Rock Falls, Iowa.

Linda Lou Hoblit was born on October 12, 1945 at Mercy Hospital, Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of John and Emily (Bobek) Byl. 

Linda grew up in Mason City and graduated from Mason City High School in 1964.  She was united in marriage to John Hoblit on November 7, 1965.  He preceded her in death on January 1, 2021. 

Linda worked at various jobs in her career.  She worked at the Charles MacNider Art Museum in Mason City, the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City and as administrative assistant at KOEL radio in Oelwein.

Gregory Wenthold

Gregory Arnold Wenthold, age 99, passed away Thursday, September 2, 2021 at Winneshiek County Medical Center. Greg was born on January 31, 1922 in Festina, Iowa, and was one of twelve children born to the late Henry and Margaret (Kleve) Wenthold. 

 

Greg was a quiet and gentle man. He was strong in his faith, serving as usher for the church for many years. He was generous to his church and community. He was loved by those he met.

 

Greg was a skilled mechanic. He was very dedicated to his job at Reilly Construction, working there for 65 years keeping the equipment operating. He spent many of his early years with them working “on the road”.  In fact, Greg invented a rock crusher that crushes the concrete from the road allowing it to be reused.
